Some homeowners are fortunate enough to have timber sash windows installed in their home that have been there for a long time. Admittedly these windows might not be very energy efficient and might even be hard to open and close properly but these are not reasons to have all of your sash windows replaced.
As a matter of fact there are other people that are going to efforts to find windows such as the ones that you have in your home. Each year homeowners or people who are building new homes are in contact with sash window suppliers trying to locate old, character windows that they can have refurbished and brought up to modern standards.
Before they can do this they have to locate old windows that they can purchase. These can be found in a variety of places. Perhaps salvage yards might have a stock of these windows, or maybe people that deal in windows may know where there are some to be found. Sometimes by contacting installers of uPVC windows a person might be able to find out who recently removed old sash windows from their home and purchase the windows from them.
Once they find these old windows they have to work on them to upgrade them to an energy efficient window unit before installing them in their new home. This can be difficult as old sash windows can have some complicated counter-weight mechanisms and it is often best to get a carpenter or joiner who has dealt with sash windows before to do this work.
However once the sash windows have been refurbished they can be fitted into a home and will display a lot more character then modern sash windows. So if you have old sash windows that you are thinking of replacing, make sure that you really want to get rid of them, or perhaps you might rather look at the possibility of getting them restored to their former glory.
